POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

Proper care during the post-operative period is an integral part of your surgical treatment program. It is imperative that these instructions are followed to insure proper healing and to obtain the best results.

  1. Go directly home, keeping your feet elevated on the way.

  2. While at home, elevate your feet six inches above hip level by supporting feet and legs with pillows.

  3. Fill prescriptions for pain medications immediately and take as directed. If you have any difficulties taking the medicine, discontinue and call the office immediately.

  4. Apply an ice bag covered with a towel across the ankle or behind the knee (if you have a cast on) for one hour on and one hour off for the first three days post-operatively.

  5. Swelling is expected; occasionally, the skin may take on a bruised appearance. This is normal, and no cause for alarm.

  6. Keep your bandage/cast clean and dry. DO NOT remove the bandage or inspect the wound. A small amount of blood on the bandage is normal.

  7. Exercise your legs by bending your knees­do not walk on leg or bear weight unless otherwise specified by your doctor.

  8. Avoid use of alcoholic beverages and curtail use of tobacco products.

  9. Ambulation Instructions: You may walk as necessary ______________ weight-bearing left/right foot with post-op shoe / crutches / cast only as tolerated.

  10. If you have any problems or concerns you can call the office anytime. Call the office immediately if:

    • The bandages become overly stained
    • Your medications do not stop the discomfort
    • You should bump or injure the surgical site
    • You develop a fever
    • You get your dressings wet
