POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS
Proper care during the post-operative period is an integral part of your surgical treatment program. It is imperative that these instructions are followed to insure proper healing and to obtain the best results.
- Go directly home, keeping your feet elevated on the way.
- While at home, elevate your feet six inches above hip level by supporting feet and legs with pillows.
- Fill prescriptions for pain medications immediately and take as directed. If you have any difficulties taking the medicine, discontinue and call the office immediately.
- Apply an ice bag covered with a towel across the ankle or behind the knee (if you have a cast on) for one hour on and one hour off for the first three days post-operatively.
- Swelling is expected; occasionally, the skin may take on a bruised appearance. This is normal, and no cause for alarm.
- Keep your bandage/cast clean and dry. DO NOT remove the bandage or inspect the wound. A small amount of blood on the bandage is normal.
- Exercise your legs by bending your kneesdo not walk on leg or bear weight unless otherwise specified by your doctor.
- Avoid use of alcoholic beverages and curtail use of tobacco products.
- Ambulation Instructions: You may walk as necessary ______________ weight-bearing left/right foot with post-op shoe / crutches / cast only as tolerated.
- If you have any problems or concerns you can call the office anytime. Call the office immediately if:
- The bandages become overly stained
- Your medications do not stop the discomfort
- You should bump or injure the surgical site
- You develop a fever
- You get your dressings wet
