  1. Diabetes can result in significant nerve damage to your foot. This damage is very gradual and you may not notice until it has already become significant.

  2. The nerve damage can result in a lack of sufficient feeling in your feet or toes. This can be very dangerous in that you may have an injury to the foot and not realize it. This can result in serious problems including infection.

  3. The most important thing for you to do to avoid these serious problems is to always protect your feet with shoes even while in your home.

  4. Daily foot examinations are also important. You should examine your feet daily on the top, bottom and between the toes. Any skin damage such as blisters, new discoloration of skin, or new ulceration should be reported to us immediately.

  5. Shoe gear should be changed regularly. Never wear shoes that are old or broken down. Purchase shoes as instructed by the office. Because your shoe size may change have you feet measured be a salesperson every time you purchase shoes.

  6. Diabetes effects the normal sweat glands of the foot. This results in very dry skin. Therefore you should use some hand cream on the feet daily. Avoid placing any of the cream between the toes.
